Deployment Project

Inspired by the book Dinner with the Smileys, in 2014-15 our family embarked on the Deployment Dinner Project.

Our goal? To get to know our community by inviting them to fill a seat at our dinner table.

The only rule: Each Sunday’s dinner guest is someone (or someones) who have never come for dinner before.

We had so much fun that now, starting out on our soldier’s 5th overseas deployment, we are going to do it again!

Why the pineapple?

Because our soldier hates pinapple. So much so does he hate everything about them that we rarely bother to have them when he’s home.

So when he is away, we have a choice.

We can be sad all the time and simply try and get through the months apart.

Or we can buy a pineapple, and enjoy the things that we get to do while he’s gone, making the most of our days until he’s back with us.

We choose to find the joy.

Most days at least.

Inviting members of our community to join us, eat with us, talk with us and share about their lives and what they love about their community and their part in it, we can learn more about where we live and the people who make everything happen.

Our previous deployment saw visitors including:

Several police officers from the RCMP, Military Police, Kingston Police, Ontario Provincial Police and corrections/peace officers.

A Kingston fire hall.

The mayor of Kingston, ON

Our MP and MPP.

An environmental engineer.

A radio DJ.

An MMA fighter.

A Division Commander of the Canadian Army.

A local musician.

A local historian.

A teacher.

A reporter.

And that was just the beginning…..
