A Canadian Contest

Well, pretty soon I’m going to have a new layout and a new blog name, thanks to Utterly Chaotic.

I am so excited!

So in preparation, I would like to write a blog where I let you in on life as a Canadian, as opposed to American, Military family.

http://www.google.ca/imgres

Because most of my readers are American and people have tweeted and emailed and commented some crazy questions to me….  being that our new base is less than 2 hours from the closest American base (Fort Drum), I feel like I could learn a little about you, too!

So please ask something so I have something to say!  It could be about security, shopping, pay, rank structure, deployments, socialization, etc. You don’t have to be an American Military spouse to ask, anyone can! And the question doesn’t have to be military either, do you have questions about Health Care, poutine, igloos, or the proper use of the word ‘hoser?’ (OK, about that last one… I have questions about that, too….)

So think up something serious or funny to ask me and get to it!  If you are a military spouse, feel free to let me in on a little part of your world, too.  Do you live on base?  Do you pay for housing?  Do you shop at the Commissary? Do you have to use ID to get to your house?

See, I have a ton of questions too!  Consider this a ‘get to know your neighbour’ segment, and I can learn something about your country that isn’t from Honey Boo Boo or your election commercials.

As I realized I have just as many questions and I thought, how can we combat this whole pissing contest mentality where we as military wives (and mom’s, and women, and people) constantly one-up each other….

So, I have asked a few other bloggers and we’re going to share!  For the next little while, some bloggers you may or may not know are going to share on here the different struggles they may face as members of different branches of the military.  What makes them different?  How are they the same?  What does a day in their life look like?  How can we support and encourage them, instead of tearing them down because their challenges are not the same as ours?

Then, when we have heard from everyone, I will end it all off with a post about what it’s like to be a Canadian military wife, answering YOUR questions!

So while you are here, can you check out the facebook page if you haven’t already?

https://www.facebook.com/reccewifesblog

As the blog goes through changes, I want to make sure everyone stays on board, so ‘like’ me over there, or on twitter….  It’s not always lame, honest!

And then here it is, my little contest.  I’ve never had a contest, and I believe for this one I will use something very Canadian for it!

So everyone who checks this out, asks a question in the comments during this or one of the guest posts, and then shares this either on facebook or twitter or on your blog, will have the chance for me to mail them….

Maple Syrup Candies!

I was going to send actual Maple Syrup, but, well, this seems much less likely to end badly.  And I’ll send them anywhere you are :).

Just leave me a question and comment and we’ll have our lucky person all randomly picked when I post my blog answering your questions!

I have no idea if this is the right way to have a contest,   so here it is!  A very Canadian contest that’s really laid back, has almost no rules and will mostly just run at my whim.  Cause that’s how we roll!

DON’T FORGET to leave me an email address or a blog address or something to contact you if you are the winner!

And if you are a military spouse from ANY branch and want to participate and write me something, lets do it!  Leave me a comment or email me at reccewife(at)gmail(dot)com!

I'm an American military spouse. I live on a base…and yes, must show i.d. to get into my neighborhood. There are 5 branches of the military here.. How many are there in Canada?

HONEY BOO BOO??? NOOOOOO! You can't hold that child against us! Golly, this is a fabulous idea though- I have so many awkward questions: following with Crystal I would love to know how many branches there are and what they do! Is it difficult with part of the country speaking French and part speaking English? Could you be stationed on the French Canadian side? Do you speak French and that would be absolutely no problem? It seems Americans are deploying all the time and Canada seems so laid back- do you all have deployments? (I mean, I know Gene was with some Canadian fellows on the NATO base!) Do they do field training in remote parts of Canada? Is your military open to bother genders? (Our Marine Corps still has some MOS's that aren't open to females or are just opening up to them! We have friends in an Infantry unit that just got their first wave of females in- 3 for the whole unit!) How often will you switch bases/PCS?
I have more, but this is becoming a post of it's own instead of a comment, so I'll give it a break!

How different are the uniforms? Do you have several branches? Is everyone required to serve or is it voluntary? Do officers and enlisted mingle well? Or is there a stigma against the ranks like there is in the US? What do you like most about Canada (not military related).

We live on base (so we have to show ID to get to our house), our housing/rent is covered by BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing), I do shop at the commissary here because living in Hawaii off base costs are sky high!

We actually had a large group of Canadian troops on base for the RIMPAC exercises! Not to mention they kicked the our Sailor's butts playing hockey on an aircraft carrier!

We have many different programs here in the US to help military families. Are you given any services, training, counseling, etc? Are most Canadians supportive of the war and the troops themselves? How old do you have to be to enlist in the Canadian military?

I'm an AF Reservist and a dual mil family. I see a number of Canadians on Peterson AFB, that are stationed at NORAD. What other American bases have Canadians present, where you and your family could potentially be stationed? Do you folks receive some sort of additional stipend for living in the US, like we might receive a Cost Of Living Adjustment for living overseas?

    Great post!

    Not a military question.

How is schooling structured in Canada?

Here there is 6 or 7 years of elementary. 2 or 3 years of middle school. And 4 years of high school before university. How is Canada similar or different? Are there a lot of private school options? Is there a big home schooling trend there like here?

When we were at Fort Drum and lived on the St. Lawrence River across from Canada, I spent a good amount of my day staring over the water and wondering what was going on over there. Do the people on the Canada side do the same at the Americans??

Just kidding. That wasn't my real question. 😉

My real question is do you have/what are your FRG's like?

By the way, I ADORE maple syrup candy. I look for it at all the country stores we go to (those seem to be the only places to find it!).
